She Was 61 and Pregnant — But the Baby Wasn’t Hers

When Kristine Casey found out she was pregnant, she wasn’t shocked because of an unplanned pregnancy. She was shocked because she was 61 years old, well past menopause, and the baby growing inside her belonged to someone else — her own daughter.

A Daughter’s Long Struggle

Sara Connell, Kristine’s daughter, had spent years trying to have a baby. After multiple losses and failed attempts, she and her husband turned to IVF, using her own eggs and her husband’s sperm to create an embryo. But Sara’s body wasn’t able to carry the pregnancy to term.

That’s when Kristine made a decision most people would call unthinkable.

“I’ll Carry the Baby Myself”

Kristine offered to become her daughter’s gestational surrogate. The embryo, made entirely from Sara and her husband, would be implanted into Kristine’s own body.

There was just one enormous obstacle: Kristine had already gone through menopause years earlier.

To prepare her body for pregnancy again, doctors put her through an intensive hormone therapy regimen designed to essentially “restart” her reproductive system. It was rare, risky, and largely unprecedented for a woman her age.

Defying the Odds

Against long medical odds, the treatment worked. The embryo implanted, and Kristine’s pregnancy progressed normally. She carried her own grandchild for nine months, glowing through ultrasounds with her daughter by her side.

In 2011, at Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago, Kristine gave birth via C-section to a healthy baby boy named Finnean.

At 61, she had just delivered her grandson into the world — with her daughter watching, and finally, holding the child she’d waited so long for.

A Different Kind of Motherhood

The story captured global attention, not just for the medical rarity, but for what it represented: a mother giving her daughter the one thing she couldn’t give herself.

For Sara, it meant finally becoming a mom after years of heartbreak. For Kristine, it meant something she’d later describe as one of the most meaningful things she’d ever done — using her own body, one more time, to bring her family joy.

Their story remains one of the most talked-about surrogacy journeys in recent memory, a reminder that love sometimes shows up in the most extraordinary, biology-defying ways.
