He Went Viral for His Neck. What Happened Next Is Far Darker

In 2018, the internet couldn’t stop laughing at his neck. By 2025, nobody was laughing at all.

Charles Dion McDowell became a household meme after his Escambia County, Florida, mugshot spread across Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, his unusually thick neck turning a routine drug arrest into a viral sensation. Nearly a million people now follow him on Instagram. But eight years later, McDowell’s story has taken a dramatically darker turn — one that has little to do with jokes.

From Meme to Music Video

McDowell leaned into the fame fast. He teamed up with fellow internet personality “Daddy Long Neck” for a 2019 rap track, “Neckst Big Thing,” which racked up millions of YouTube views. He joined an internet collective known as the Shrimp Gang. For a while, virality looked like it might pay off.

It didn’t last. Court and jail records show McDowell has been arrested more than 20 times in Escambia County alone since 2010, according to local station WSB-TV. After his viral moment, the arrests kept coming: drug possession, a high-speed chase in Alabama, driving on a revoked license, and, in 2022, an aggravated stalking warrant after he allegedly showed up at a woman’s home and sent her threatening messages.

A Far More Serious Charge

Then came February 2025. Cherokee County, Georgia, sheriff’s deputies arrested McDowell on charges far removed from traffic stops and drug possession. According to jail records reported by Fox 5 Atlanta, he was charged with five counts of illegally transmitting nude images without consent and four counts of electronically furnishing obscene material to a minor, along with harassing phone calls.

According to the arrest warrant obtained by TMZ, McDowell allegedly sent sexually explicit videos of a woman — without her consent — to her 13-year-old son, her 16-year-old daughter, her mother, and another person, using a phone and laptop on multiple occasions. Authorities said he was extradited from Escambia County on an out-of-state fugitive warrant before being booked in Georgia the same day.

McDowell was held without bond. Citing Georgia’s child-protection privacy laws, officials declined to release further details about the allegations.

What We Know

McDowell’s mugshot went viral in 2018 over his unusually wide neck, launching an internet-fame career including music and merchandise.
He has faced dozens of arrests since 2010, including drug, driving, and stalking charges.
In February 2025, Cherokee County, Georgia, authorities arrested him on felony charges tied to distributing explicit material, including to a minor.
He was held without bond, and no news outlet has since reported that the case has been resolved.
He previously denied any medical explanation for his neck, telling LADbible in 2019, “It ain’t no medical condition. It was just my neck. I can’t figure it out.”

Why This Matters

McDowell’s arc — mugshot to meme to music deal to felony charges — is a stark illustration of a pattern that’s become common in the social media era: platforms turning someone’s worst day into entertainment, then rewarding the attention with real fame and real money, with little regard for what happens next. Jeremy Meeks, the so-called “hot felon,” parlayed his own viral mugshot into a modeling career; McDowell’s trajectory shows the same internet machinery can just as easily elevate someone whose behavior escalates rather than reforms.

It also lands at a moment when child-safety advocates and lawmakers nationwide are pushing harder scrutiny of how explicit material moves through phones and social platforms, with several states tightening penalties for non-consensual image distribution in the past two years. A case involving a former internet celebrity with a built-in audience of hundreds of thousands adds a uncomfortable wrinkle to that conversation: the same platforms built to spread a joke can just as easily spread far more serious harm.

McDowell’s fans once flooded his comments with neck jokes. Now, as his case moves through the Georgia courts, the only question that matters has nothing to do with his neck at all.
