The deer was still mostly deer-shaped when biologists found it. Ten minutes later, it wasn’t.
In December 2022, researchers with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida stumbled onto a scene near Naples that would end up rewriting what scientists thought they knew about one of the state’s most destructive invaders. A nearly 15-foot female Burmese python was in the middle of swallowing a fully grown white-tailed deer — whole.

A Snake Nearly the Size of the Meal
The numbers alone are hard to picture. The python weighed about 115 pounds. The deer weighed roughly 77 pounds — nearly two-thirds of the snake’s own body mass. To fit it down, the python had to stretch its jaws to 93% of its maximum possible gape.
Wildlife biologist Ian Bartoszek, who leads the tracking program, called it unforgettable. “Watching an invasive apex predator swallow a full-sized deer in front of you is unforgettable,” he said. “The impact the Burmese python has on native wildlife cannot be denied.”
By the time the team arrived, the python was already committed. It had swallowed about half the deer, and finishing the job took roughly 30 more minutes. Had the deer still been alive, researchers say they would have stepped in. It wasn’t, so instead they watched something almost no one had documented in the wild before.
How a Snake Eats Something Bigger Than Its Own Head
The trick isn’t size. It’s engineering. Burmese pythons have an unfused lower jaw that spreads to accommodate massive prey, combined with skin so elastic it makes up more than half the circumference of that stretched-out mouth. Together, it lets them eat prey up to six times larger than other snakes their size could manage.
Herpetologist Bruce Jayne, who studies the mechanics, put the broader scale in perspective. If every radio-tagged python in the study area ate a deer this large, it would add up to nearly 13,000 pounds of deer consumed. Multiply that across an estimated population researchers can’t fully count, and the math turns unsettling fast.

Why Scientists Are Watching So Closely
This wasn’t a one-off curiosity. It was the first time biologists had actually witnessed a python eating a deer this size in the wild — though deer remains had shown up in python necropsies before. Confirming it firsthand mattered, because Burmese pythons have already devastated South Florida’s populations of foxes, bobcats, raccoons, and other mammals since establishing themselves in the Everglades decades ago.

As Bartoszek put it, this is a fight scientists are still trying to fully understand the size of. And every deer-sized meal is a reminder they haven’t found the ceiling yet.
