She Became a Pilot at 17. Her Mother Now Faces an Unimaginable Loss.
Some parents spend years encouraging their children to follow their dreams. Others quietly worry about the risks those dreams might bring. For Camila Gadelha Corteleti, both feelings existed together. Now, after losing her 20-year-old daughter in a Florida plane crash, she is confronting the fear she says she carried for years.
Her daughter, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, was one of nine people killed when a private Learjet 60 crashed near Greenacres, Florida, on November 1, 2026.
Nathalia was serving as the aircraft’s co-pilot. The jet had departed Austin, Texas, and was traveling toward the Bahamas when disaster struck.
But behind the headlines about the crash is the story of a young woman who had spent much of her life pursuing aviation.
She pursued the dream before most teenagers could drive
Nathalia’s interest in flying started early. She earned her pilot’s license in 2023, when she was just 17 years old and still attending West Boca Raton Community High School.
She trained through the school’s Aviation and Aerospace Academy before continuing her education at American Flyers in Florida.
Her ambitions extended far beyond obtaining a license. She worked as a flight instructor and later became a commercial pilot.
According to the New York Post, she had accumulated approximately 1,300 flight hours and worked as a commercial pilot for around nine months.
In an earlier interview with CBS12, Nathalia joked about her unusual achievement.
“I can fly,” she said, describing how she responded when people pointed out that she could not yet drive.
For her, aviation was not simply an occupation. It represented a dream she had worked toward since childhood.
The words her mother will never forget
Following the crash, Nathalia’s mother spoke about the difficult emotions surrounding her daughter’s career.
Camila told the New York Post that she had always feared flying might eventually take Nathalia away from her.
“I knew that her dream was going to be the thing that would take her away from me,” she said.
She also explained that she wanted her daughter to experience the life she had dreamed about, despite the fears she carried.
“I know if she could pick a way to go, this would be her way to go, but I didn’t want it to be so soon.”
Her words reveal a painful conflict. She felt proud of her daughter’s determination, but she also understood the risks associated with aviation.
Nathalia’s sister, Guilia Filgueiras, also remembered her as an extraordinary young woman who pursued her ambitions.
She described her sister as brave and said she continued fighting until the final moments.
What happened aboard the aircraft?
The Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday.
According to air traffic control recordings reported by CBS News, the crew encountered icing and moderate turbulence while flying at approximately 35,000 feet.
The situation deteriorated rapidly.
The aircraft began losing altitude, and the crew declared an emergency. Radio communications captured increasingly urgent reports of the rapid descent.
The plane eventually struck the ground and erupted into flames.
All nine people aboard died, including Nathalia, the other pilot, and seven passengers.
The NTSB subsequently reported evidence that the aircraft may have started breaking apart before impact. Investigators are examining weather conditions, possible mechanical problems and crew actions.
They have not established the cause.

Why This Matters
Nathalia’s story highlights something many American families understand: supporting someone’s ambition does not always mean feeling comfortable with the risks involved.
Parents encourage children to pursue demanding careers, explore unfamiliar opportunities and build lives beyond their childhood homes. Sometimes, those ambitions involve dangers that families cannot control.
The tragedy also raises important questions about aviation safety. Investigators must establish what happened during the aircraft’s final moments before anyone can responsibly assign blame.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has also urged people to avoid criticizing the young co-pilot before investigators establish the facts. His comments reinforce the importance of separating evidence from online speculation.
For Camila, however, no investigation can change the loss of her daughter.
She watched Nathalia pursue something she loved, supported her ambition, and hoped she would have many more years to enjoy it.
Her daughter’s dream became her career. Tragically, her life ended far too soon.
And the words her mother shared afterward reveal the painful reality of loving someone enough to let them follow a dream, even when that dream frightens you.
